February Meeting

The February meeting of the Carnegie Democratic Committee was very profitable.

1- We voted to donate $250.00 to the Carnegie Borough 5 K race on Saturday, April 25th sponsored by Quantum Spirits to benefit the Carnegie Fire Department.  This is the same amount pledged last year by the Committee.

2- After the Allegheny County Committee 2020 Endorsement Meeting at the IBEW Local 5 Union Hall near the Hot Metal Bridge on Sunday, February 16, a scandal broke out centered Allegheny County Democratic Committee Chairwoman Eileen Kelly.  Essentially, the Committee had endorsed House candidate Heather Kass who had posted derogatory messages to her Facebook page about addiction, gender and Obamacare and who had posted positive comments about President Trump.  Chairwoman Kelly supported the Committee’s endorsement over a progressive Jess Benham.  When confronted, Kelly apparently instead of answering that charge deflected attention rather to Rich Fitzgerald whom she accused of endorsing “white male” challenger Chris Rolan over incumbent State Rep. Summer Lee, an African American.  Several lawmakers and Allegheny Committee members called for Kelly’s resignation. Thus far, she has not resigned.

After a discussion about the situation, our Committee has asked our Secretary, Hans Gruenert, to draft a letter to Kelly clearly stating our disapproval of her support of Heather Kass regardless of the Allegheny Committee’s endorsement.  We would like to know more about why the Allegheny Committee did endorse a known Trump apologist also!  Something sounds very wrong here.

3- We voted in a new Chair of our Committee after Rick D’Loss resigned as Chair.  After taking on his new role as Carnegie Council Member, being on the Dems Committee would divide his time unfairly, he thought.  He did a great job getting us rolling on issues and what we needed to do to be organized and served long and well.  Thanks, Rick, for your previous and continuing service to Carnegie!

We elected Mike Sarsfield, Carnegie Safety Director to take Rick’s place as Chair.  This was Mike’s first meeting as the official Chair!  Mike brings a long history of service to Carnegie as well as an enthusiasm for the work of the Democratic Committee.  Congratulations, Mike!

4- Ramond MeBane was voted in as our newest Committee member.  He will represent Ward 1, District 2 in Carnegie as Carl Zenone resigns from his seat as Ward rep.  Carl will remain as Committee Treasurer. Thanks, Carl!  Congratulations to our new member, Raymond!

5- We had a visitor this month, Mary Zuccaro.  Moving to Carnegie 3 years ago to be with family, Mary is a seasoned Democrat having campaigned for Jesse Jackson back in the 80’s!  Welcome, Mary.  We will find a job for you!If you have an item you would like to see the Committee bring up for discussion at a future meeting, you may fill out the form below with your interest in the subject line.  Also, sign up to subscribe to this blog for future posts.  Thank you.
