During the run up to the most recent gubernatorial primary, an informal group called “Progressives West” met monthly in Carnegie. The group is led by CeeCee McNulty, chair of the Democratic Committee in Bridgeville. Progressives West consists mainly of left democrats who can generally be classified as anti-establishment (including myself). There were diverse opinions on who should be the Democratic candidate. Early support went to John Hanger, but his campaign wasn’t getting much traction statewide and he dropped out. Most of the support then shifted to Katie McGinty. Minority support was expressed for Tom Wolf and Allyson Schwartz.
As we know, Tom Wolf won both the primary and general elections. He then selected Katie McGinty to be his chief of staff. Now we are on the eve of another election. 2016 brings not just the presidential campaign, but also the race against Sen. Pat Toomey. So far, Joe Sestak is the only active competition. Sestak lost to Toomey in the last election. Amazingly, Toomey won by painting Sestak as weak on terrorism and national defense. I say “amazingly” because, as most of you know, Sestak is a retired Navy admiral. Could Sestak beat Toomey in a rematch? Democratic leaders in the Senate aren’t so sure, and they are looking for options. They consider Katie McGinty as a strong possible. See this article in the Philadelphia Inquirer.
